ASSU STRIKE 2013: UNION BEGINS CALL OFF DISCUSSIONS
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU is set to convene its National Executive Committee this weekend to
discuss the offer made to the union by the Federal
Government to develop public Universities, it was learnt on Wednesday, and announce its decision to call off or
continue the ongoing strike action. ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Faggae after a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan which ended in the early
hours of Tuesday had told reporters that the union would
take back an undisclosed message to the striking lecturers. The Federal Government had offered to inject N1.1tn into
public Universities in the next five years. The source gathered that the union had concluded
arrangement to hold the meeting to collate the views of
members before a final decision would be taken on
whether to accept or reject the offer. Usually, the decision to embark on or to call off strike is
taken at the union’s NEC meeting. It was gathered that the meeting might hold any day
between now and next week Friday. In the hierarchy of ASUU, the zonal coordinators after a meeting of the national officers are to brief the branch
chairmen who would consequently call for congress in
their respective Universities. But a source who spoke on condition of anonymity said a
meeting with the zonal coordinators usually take place two
days after a major meeting with the Federal Government
because they have to come from the nine zones of the
country. He said, “There is a national strike coordinating committee
comprising the national principal officers and the zonal
coordinators which is the highest decision-making body. In
the country, we have nine zones. After the meeting, the
zonal coordinators will brief the branch chairmen who will
now call for a congress to brief all members.” Asked if the strike would be called off soon, the source
replied, “It is not a decision that could be taken in a hurry.
All members must be carried along. We have a mandate
which is very clear – that is the implementation of the
2009 agreement. Anything other than that, they will
have to relate to members. The zonal coordinators will collate the decision of the branches and forward them to
the national officers.” A chairman of a local branch of ASUU in a University in the South-West confided in one of our correspondents
that the date for the NEC meeting would be communicated
to all the chapters on Thursday (today). Another source said, “Before we embarked on the strike,
there was a referendum. The referendum did not emanate
from the principal officers but from the branches.
Members must be briefed before any final decision could
be taken.” Meanwhile, strong indications emerged on Wednesday
that ASUU may soon call off its four-month old strike as the Nigeria Labour Congress described the meeting
between President Jonathan and the leadership of the
union as the most meaningful since 2009. The Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Mr. Chris Uyot,
in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents
on Wednesday, urged ASUU to explain to its members the offer the Federal Government had made to the striking
lecturers in order to arrive at the next line of action. According to him, since ASUU is an affiliate of the NLC, it is the responsibility of the union to decide on whether to
call off the strike or not in accordance with standard
labour procedure. He said, “We simply advise that they carry out meaningful
consultation with their members and ensure that whatever
was offered was explained in totality to members of ASUU. “I want to say that since the agreement of 2009 was
signed, and of the various negotiations that have taken
place, this was the most meaningful of the meetings. “All discussions were taken aside and the issues in the
2009 agreement were examined, discussed and analyzed
in totality. “Let the ASUU explain in totality the offer that was made to its members. Even the NLC has to explain to the
members of the National Executive Council of the Congress
before taking decisions in such matters. I can only say
that calling off the strike depends on ASUU,” he added.

SHOCKING!! Tragedy in Anambra: 25 worshipers die in stampede
No fewer than 25 persons lost their lives in the early
hours of yesterday in a stampede at the monthly
adoration crusade organised by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obinma
of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry for prayers and
healing at Uke in Anambra State.
The stampede was attributed to the unprecedented crowd at the prayer ground. Sunday Sun gathered from
eye witnesses that the victims died of exhaustion.
Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and the governorship
candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA),
Chief Willie Obiano, were among the dignitaries that
attended the event. But the duo had left before the tragedy happened. Eyewitnesses told Sunday Sun that Obi
addressed the worshipers and promised to sponsor 20
persons on pilgrimage to Israel as well as provide a better
place of worship.
“The last Friday all-night prayer was the largest. I have
not seen the magnitude of crowd I saw since the history of this ministry. Maybe it was because it fell on All Saints’
Day, which Catholics regard as a holy day of obligation.
So, many people didn’t open their shops and that was
why the crowd was too much. It is possible that the cause
of these deaths was stampede and exhaustion which
occurred when people started struggling to leave the venue,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
Emeka Ilodiuba from Nnokwa in Idemili South council area
of Anambra State who lost his wife in the incident, gave
the account of the tragic event saying “I came with my
wife Ebube Muonso. When the prayer ended about 5.30
am, we stood to go home. Before then, the governor and his entourage had left. But
when we got to the entrance, there was unprecedented
crowd trying to get out of the prayer ground. The crowd
surged forward and that was when my wife fell down and
people fell on top of her till she died.”
He maintained that the presence of Obi and Obiano at the prayer ground had nothing to do with the incident and
called on the security agencies to thoroughly investigate
the major cause of the stampede that claimed the lives of
the innocent worshipers.
Another eyewitness said trouble started shortly after the
event, when a group of people behaving like paid agents started shouting “Fire, fire, fire” which made people to
scamper for safety.
It is believed that the commotion was deliberately
orchestrated by some people who learnt that Governor
Peter Obi would visit the place. But the governor had
quietly left the venue before the incident happened. The unprecedented crowd was attributed to the fact that
the adoration fell on All Saints’ Day, which was the first
day of the month (Friday) when many people usually
gather for worship.
When informed about the tragedy, Governor Obi cancelled
all his scheduled engagements for Saturday and rushed the scene to assess the situation. He described the
incident as a national calamity that took the entire state
by surprise. While addressing the crowd at the Crown, Nkpor,
Immaculate Heart and Borromeo hospitals, Obi expressed
shock at the incident and prayed God to grant the families
of the dead the fortitude to bear the loss.
He assured that investigation had kicked off to ascertain
the cause of the incident and promised to upgrade the Crown hospital, Nkpor in line with the commitment of his
administration to partner with private hospitals to improve
the heath sector while insisting that the incident was as a
result of stampede.
“I was officially invited by the spiritual director of the
Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry and I went and addressed the people. Part of the thing I told them was that we are
not playing politics in the church and I left by 3.30 am. I
went in company of about 10 persons mainly my siblings.
So, I’m depressed, confused and sad at the development”,
Obi said.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG in charge of C Department, Mr. Kachi Udorji, who led other top police
officers to the prayer ground and later to Crown Hospital
expressed shock over the incident, stressing that
investigations were already on to unravel the cause of the
incident.
He later took other top officers, including DIGs and AIGs to the Onitsha Area Command and confirmed the figure of
casualties and urged the police officers to work hard to
get to the root of the incident.
The Spiritual Director of Holy Ghost Adoration, Rev Fr.
Emmanuel Obinma, who rushed to Borromew Hospital,
looked very ruffled when our correspondent visited the place. He was, however, being condoled by Governor Obi
and other Rev Fathers present.
The Chief Medical Director of Crown Hospital, Dr. Edwin
Emegoakor, commended the governor for his spontaneous
response. He said it was a pleasant surprise to him when
the governor called him on phone few minutes after the victims were brought to the hospital to inquire about the
wounded and appealed to him to take utmost care of
them. He said, while he was still contemplating whether
the governor was actually the one that called, Obi arrived
at the hospital.
There are indications that the state might take care of the medical bills of the victims as the governor was said to
have directed the hospitals to compile the names of the
wounded.
Emegoakor said that no death was recorded and that most
of the victims brought to his hospital were revived and in
stable condition. However, at Immaculate Heart Hospital, Nkpor, over 17 persons were confirmed dead. This is in
addition to nine other deceased at Borromeo. The
whereabouts of three other persons still remains unknown
as at the time of filing this report. The governor said that
a panel of enquiry would be set up immediately to
ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
NEWS: FACE OF A DEVIL
■ Kills uncle’s 9-yr-old son, another 5-yr-old boy ■ Collects N.2m ransom from uncle ■ Demands N3m from second victim’s parents ■ Harvests kids’ vital organs for money ritual Michael Nwobodo’s inordinate ambition to get rich
quick has left two families in deep sorrow and anguish.
The 24-yr-old gruesomely murdered two young boys and
harvested their vital organs for money making rituals.
He’s a kidnapper, armed robber and ritual killer who hails
from Umualaguroyi Uhueze Nenwe village in Aninri West Local Government Area of Enugu State. He committed the
heinous crimes between August and October this year. In the first incident, which occurred in Ohuhu, Abia State
on August 7, 2013, he abducted Emmanuel Nwobodo, the
nine-year-old son of his uncle, Nnamdi Nwobodo,
immediately the boy returned from school at 4.00pm on
that fateful day. He took the boy into a nearby bush,
beheaded him and proceeded to harvest his kidneys, lungs, heart and genitals. Done with the horrible act, he
calmly dumped the boy’s dismembered body on the bank
of a nearby river.
When evening came and the boy had still not returned
from school, the parents started searching for him.
Chizoba even joined in the search for the unfortunate boy. When he could not be found, his parents reported
the matter to the police at Isikwuato Police Station, Abia
State.
Later, Chizoba made a call to his uncle, informing him
thus: “I told my uncle that I kidnapped the child at
4.00pm, that if he can pay me ransom of N300,000 I would release the child to him. He paid me N200,000.
After some time, I called my uncle again and demanded
another sum of N200,000. I told him to sell his land, but
my uncle refused to pay the money. At the time I was
demanding the money, I had already killed the child.”
On October 11, 2013, barely two months after murdering nine-year-old Emmanuel, Chizoba again abducted another
child, Promise Uwakwe, a five-year-old boy as he was
returning from school. This time around, he enticed the
innocent boy with biscuits, dragged him into the bush and
when the obviously startled boy began to scream after
sensing danger, Chizoba quickly strangled him to death and then removed the boy’s vital organs.
Promise’s father, Mr Ngozi Nwakwe said the family
became worried when the boy’s school uniform was found
on the ground but he could not be found. After the first
day, he reported to the police at Anniri Police Post and
the policemen joined in the search for the child. When the child was not found after three days, the case was
transferred to the Anti-kidnapping Squad of the Enugu
State Police Command.
Like the well-known Otokoto ritual killing incident that
occurred in 1996 in Imo State, the blood of the gruesomely
murdered innocent little boys cried unceasingly before the Throne of the Almighty for justice.
“It was when the suspect demanded N3 million ransom
from us that we alerted the police and they rounded him
up and he confessed to them that he had killed my son
and removed his genitals lungs, kidneys and heart and
then dumped him inside a water tank from which we recovered his corpse,” Nwakwe said in anguish.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abubakar Adamu
who narrated Chizoba’s murderous escapades to Sunday
Sun revealed that the suspect was exposed when he
called Mr Nwakwe and demanded N3 million ransom for
the boy. The family refused and reported to the police. CP Adamu said the Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping
Squad, Alex Akinlalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police
(DSP) and his team swung into action and arrested
Chizoba at his village.
In a brief chat after his arrest by the police, Chizoba told
Sunday Sun “I am a kidnapper, armed robber, ritualist, artist and musician. I traveled to India in 2013 to acquire
power so that anything I engage in will prosper. I spent
one month and one week in India. I needed money, so I
contacted a herbalist who told me that if I wanted to
make money I should look for two boys and two girls
between the ages of four and nine years old for money ritual.”
Continuing, he said: “I used the two boys for the ritual. I
bought red candle, blue candle, black candle, white candle
and other ritual materials and did some incantations after
which I threw the human parts into the bush.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Elizabeth Nwobodo, mother of Emmanuel, the first victim, is crying and calling on the government to
ensure that justice is done and she has been assured by
CP Adamu that the suspect would definitely be charged to
court for his heinous crimes at the conclusion of
investigations.
